VALENCIA’S ‘CONCERTS DE VIVERS’ ENDS WITH THE WATERBOYS & MR SANCHEZ

MIKE SCOTT’s The Waterboys brought the curtain down on another successful series of events at Valencia’s ‘Concerts de Vivers’ music festival, held in the beautiful Jardines del Real in the heart of the city.

The evening got underway with a polished performance from hometown alt-rockers Mr Sanchez, who took to the stage and launched into a fierce version of ‘Volar.’

The majority of the 5000-capacity audience were clearly there for the headliners, and at times Mr Sanchez fought to be heard over the incessant din of their conversations. But such is the fate of the warm up band the world over. However, they deserved much, much better.

An all too short set of 35-minutes included a glorious version of 2021’s ‘My New Friend Jack,’ joyful Johnny Marr summertime riffs aplenty, before the trio made their exit to warm applause.

As dark fell, and with the temperature still in the mid-30s’, The Waterboys arrival on stage was greeted with a rapturous fervour befitting their reputation.

A run through from a staggering back catalogue, a smattering of tracks from new album, ‘All Souls Hill,’ an early appearance for a reworked ‘This is the Sea,’ probably the best Waterboys version of ‘Because The Night/The Pan Within’ medley I’ve heard, and crowd favourite, ‘Fisherman’s Blues,’ were all aired before a strangely low-key – almost half-hearted – version of ‘The Whole of the Moon’ sent their devotees off into the sweltering midnight air in full voice.
